Young Students Connect and Share Research at the Primary Science Fair

The Primary Science Team within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes has recently launched the first edition of the Primary Science Fair, a national initiative that welcomed Year 5 students and educators this year. This event seeks to ignite a passion for science and STEM careers, foster creativity, critical thinking and curiosity among young learners and encourage collaboration among different stakeholders.

An impressive 667 Year 5 students from both state and non-state schools took part in 47 interactive workshops, all inspired by the theme “Great Inventions: Bridging Science and Society.” Led by the Primary Science Team, STEM professionals and students themselves, these workshops explored the vital role of science in shaping a better future, with each session linked to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, namely SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 13 Climate Action.

The fair featured activities adapted from the acclaimed Great Science Share for Schools campaign, which inspires children to ask questions, investigate, and share their discoveries. Students delved into real-world issues such as the impact of oil spills on marine life and even designed their own inventive solutions. Junior Science Club animators and students guided hands-on sessions on topics including motion, electricity, and camouflage.

Adding further excitement, the tiny Teen Science Café initiative brought together STEM experts from leading organizations—including the University of Malta, the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, Agribusiness Education Centre, Birdlife Malta, EcoMarine Malta, Road STEAMer, Science in the City, and Heritage Malta—to deliver engaging workshops for both students and teachers.

The highlight of the week was the Primary STEM Challenge showcase where young participants enthusiastically presented and discussed their own research projects related to one of the themes – nature, sound or colours. Throughout the fair, students were encouraged to ask questions, investigate and learn about the impact of science on our lives.

The Primary Science Fair was held from Monday 12th May to Thursday, 15th May 2025 at the STEM & VET Curriculum Hub in Pembroke and concluded on Friday 16th May 2025 at the Creativity Hub within Gharb Primary School, Gozo.
