On Thursday, 29th May, the Gozo College Agius de Soldanis Middle School hosted a vibrant art event titled Art and Legacy: A Celebration of Creativity. The event celebrated the artistic achievements of students who participated in the school’s Art Club and Pottery Club throughout the year. On display were stage props, set designs, and a variety of ceramic sculptures crafted by the students.
A key highlight of the event was the official naming of two new art workshops and the pottery kiln studio. These spaces were named in honour of four significant Maltese and Gozitan artists: Wistin Camilleri, Gabriel Caruana, Paul Haber and Sina Farrugia Micallef. To commemorate this occasion, the students designed, sculpted, and glazed ceramic name plaques, paying tribute to the legacy and artistic contributions of these individuals.
The evening opened with a welcome speech by the Head of School, Ms Claire De Bono, who expressed gratitude to the attending artists, relatives, and parents. The program featured a dance performance by a group of the school’s dance students under the direction of Ms Sarah Clare Saliba, followed by an introduction and guided tour led by Head of Department of Art Mr Lino Xerri and art teacher Mr Victor Agius. They offered insight into the creative process behind the works and gave a behind-the-scenes look into the kiln studio.
Guests were then invited to the fourth floor, where they explored the art rooms—filled with works in progress—and viewed an exhibition in the main hall. Students enthusiastically explained their work to several distinguished guests, including artists Paul Camilleri Cauchi, Paul and Joan Haber, Ruben Camilleri Cauchi, Sina Farrugia Micallef, Mary Rose Caruana, and Raffaella Zammit.
This initiative marked the culmination of a series of creative activities organised by the Art Department during the academic year. These initiatives form part of the school’s commitment to the holistic and artistic development of its students. Through hands-on workshops and practical lessons, students explored various media while gaining an understanding of artistic heritage and the history of art.
