Mdina Cathedral Museum Hosts Engaging Symbol Literacy Sessions for Primary Students

The Symbol Literacy Project (SLP) has kicked off the new year at the Mdina Cathedral Museum with a series of activities, welcoming students from several primary schools for hands‑on learning experiences combining art, cultural heritage, and storytelling. This project is under the direction of Professor Adrian M. Gellel from the University of Malta and is delivered with the support of the National Literacy Agency.

Students from Qrendi Primary participated in an interactive workshop inspired by Orpheus Enchanting the Animals. Through the session, children were introduced to the Greek mythological figure of Orpheus and explored how music and myth intertwine. The visit also included a stop at the dedicated room honouring Malta’s National Poet, Dun Karm Psaila, where pupils discovered the musical instrument he played. The activity concluded with an exploration of the Museum’s renowned Neapolitan Crib, a permanent display featuring approximately 300 handcrafted figures. Students enthusiastically searched for animals and musicians within the intricate scene.

Young learners from Luqa and Gżira primary schools took part in a different SLP session focusing on themes of kindness, generosity, and the joy of giving. Using The Adoration of the Magi as a starting point, children discussed the significance of exchanging gifts and the meaning behind the offerings brought by the Three Wise Men. The workshop encouraged reflection and creativity, as students illustrated a gift they would give to Jesus or a memorable present they had received themselves.

The January SLP activities continue to strengthen the project’s role in supporting cultural education, blending artistic appreciation with value‑based learning for Malta’s youngest students.
