47 schools were awarded the internationally renowned Eco-Schools Green Flag for their outstanding dedication to sustainability, student empowerment, and climate action within their communities.
The ceremony presided over by H.E. Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, honoured students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship.
Held at Villa Blanche, limits of Żurrieq, the event was organised by Nature Trust – FEE Malta in collaboration with the Local Councils Association. St Joseph Blata l-Bajda School and St Joseph, Mater Boni Consillii School received the 10th consecutive Green Flag marking two decades of unwavering commitment towards sustainability. Five schools were awarded the prestigious international Green Flag Award for the first time. (For a full list of awardees please refer to the attachment)
For the first time in the history of the EkoSkola programme, schools also honoured Local Councils through the EkoSkola Eco-Community Collaboration Award initiative. Nine Local Councils were nominated by Eco-Schools committees, culminating in the presentation of the award, recognising exemplary partnerships between students and local authorities in driving sustainability at community level. Pembroke Local Council was acclaimed as the overall winner for this year.
More than two decades ago, Nature Trust – FEE Malta pioneered the Eco-Schools programme in Malta, opening a national pathway for young people to become active agents of change. Today EkoSkola has evolved into Malta’s flagship Education for Sustainable Development programme, empowering students to take meaningful action, speak up on environmental challenges, and design innovative solutions by engaging their communities. Through hands-on learning, democratic participation, and real-world problem-solving, students today are not only learning about sustainability, but they are leading it.
EkoSkola’s impact now spans the full breadth of the Maltese education system, with over 85% of the national student population actively participating. The programme is fully accredited by the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) at MQF Levels 1, 2 and 3, and is recognised by UNESCO as a leading model of Education for Sustainable Development. Its framework and practices are firmly aligned with Malta’s National Education Strategy 2024–2030, ensuring that students develop the knowledge, values and agency needed to become responsible citizens and environmental leaders.
This year’s Green Flag achievements once again highlight the long-standing dedication of schools flourishing as sustainability hubs. Through initiatives such as the Sustainable Mobility Campaign, run in collaboration with HSBC Malta Foundation, and the EkoSkola – Lidl Action for Climate Change: Responsible Food Consumption innovative community projects supported by partners including HSBC Malta Foundation and Lidl Malta, students are testing sustainable commuting models, increasing environmental literacy, and encouraging behavioural change. Through EkoSkola students also gain access to investigative learning platforms like NASA’s GLOBE, Young Reporters for the Environment, and LEAF, strengthening STEM learning while deepening their connection to the natural world.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr Vince Attard the Honorary President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta praised EkoSkola students for their remarkable passion and innovation. From monitoring biodiversity to advocating for sustainable mobility practices, from curbing food waste to thrift shopping, Maltese students are demonstrating that sustainable development is not a distant aspiration, but a collective responsibility and lived practice. Mr Attard reiterated that Nature Trust – FEE Malta continues to align its strategy with FEE’s GAIA 20:30 vision and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, prioritising climate resilience, equity, and the protection of Malta’s unique biodiversity and natural heritage.
The EkoSkola programme is supported by:
Local Councils Association, Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Ministry for the Environment Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness., HSBC Malta Foundation and Lidl Malta.
