The National Sport School presented the 10th Edition of the Literary evening. This was an event that showcased the student-athletes’ talents and creativity through drama, dialogues, monologues and creative writing. This year’s theme was ‘WATER’. The students tackled the theme from different perspectives showing how something as ordinary as water is such an extraordinary liquid vital to our lives. Through drama, students explored the chemistry of water, different habitats in Malta featuring fresh and brackish water and the use of the reverse osmosis to obtain drinkable water.
Students explained ‘virtual water’ as the thousands of litres of invisible water used to produce a pair of jeans, hamburgers, chocolate and pizza. Students appreciated the importance of water we often take for granted acknowledging that there are places around the world where children need to travel kilometres to get water which may not even be clean and risk getting cholera and get sick. Other students travelled along rivers crossing countries in Europe and highlighting landmarks in different countries. Though a quiz, they explored various geasers, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls and seas across the world and involved the audience to guess the answers. We learned the importance of water for our body, especially for athletes who sweat and loose water and minerals through training. Using beautiful costumes, we could enjoy how water was essential in history across time from the prehistoric times, going though Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Vikings, the Order of St. John and the British empire.
Students explored the beauties and mysteries of Lake Natron in Tanzania and the Dead Sea. Poems ‘Ix-xita’ and ‘Din gzira niexfa’ were interpreted with passion and feeling and last but not least, we learned together how the semitic word ‘l-ilma’ is made up of 2 articles. This successful event was not only a learning experience for the students and for our audience, but it was an excellent opportunity for our students to enhance their communication skills, overcome their stage fright and learn to express themselves in front of an audience and communicate with the audience using microphones.
Well done to all students involved and to all the staff whose teamwork, dedication and determination made this event a memorable experience.
