During the summer months, the National Literacy Agency organized a summer edition of the Footballers’ Read and Write Programme / Bil-Qari u l-Kitba Niskorja. The aim of this programme was to inspire a love of reading and writing amongst students who love football. Past cycles have shown that the majority of participants improved their reading skills by the end of the programme. The FRWP sessions combine the children’s love and passion for football with reading and writing, thus motivating them to read and better their overall language skills.
A limited number of pupils from across the island were selected following a public call and an informal interview process. Two groups of 10 pupils in each, attended weekly sessions on either Wednesday or Friday, at St Venera ground, Hamrun. The participants attended ten consecutive sessions and the programme was delivered by trained Literacy Leaders and Sports Leaders.
On Friday, 23rd September 2022, the National Literacy Agency organized a closure celebration for the participants at St Venera ground. Following a lively football match, the participants were awarded a certificate of participation, a book and an autographed ball.
