Celebrating Sustainability at Senglea Primary School through games, food, music and technology.

On 15th November Senglea Primary School, celebrated sustainability through the launching of the song, S.E.A Sea Environment Act.  A song about urging everyone in a quest for our environment. A Healthy Environment is a Healthy me! The song was created with children, filmed by students from the Salesian School and edited by their teacher Mr. Brian Muscat.  Here is the link to the song, which can also be found on social media.

The launching of the song paved the way towards learning about Sustainable Goals, namely SDGs 11,12,13, 14,15 through games, food and technology.

Two floor games were played among two of our junior classes- Snakes and Ladders and Twister which were provided to us by NTM, FEE and Ekoskola.  The Snakes and Ladders was about responsible consumption (SDG12) focusing on food waste whereas Twister focused on life on land (SDG15). life below water (SDG14) as well as responsible consumption(SDG12).

Our young students had a Beebot activity HoDs Science, Ms. Daniella Polidano and Ms. Melanie Olivari Saliba.  The activity was about the correct separation of waste.  They also had a relay called Happy Earth, Sad Earth where they had to distinguish between sustainable practices which make the Earth a better place and so a Happy Earth and unsustainable practices which make the Earth a worse place and therefore a Sad Earth.  Here, our young generation, were exposed to SDG11 and thus, sustainable cities and communities.

Our older junior kids had the privilege of working with renowned chef, Chef Michael Diacono, where they were asked to bring any one ingredient from home, preferably one that has a close expiry date and once at school decide on a recipe to make out of the ingredients brought. (SDG11,12).  Members from the PFFA (People Food Farmers Association) were also present and the children together with them made tea out of leaves and flowers found in our garden. They were also involved in a Wedo Activity with HoD Science, Ms. Melanie Olivari and HoD Digital Literacy, Mr. James Callus.  First, they learned about The Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch and then designed a machinery that would prevent waste from entering our seas (SDG14, SDG11).

A diver from New Dimensions Scuba was also present at school. Whilst informing the children of the amount of debris found below water, he also brought equipment and other tangible material for the children to understand better the message and concept being conveyed (SDG14,11)

It was a fruitful and fun way of learning how to be a responsible citizen as a stepping stone towards sustainable communities.
