Induction Seminar for Supply Teachers

The Education Resources Directorate (ERD) and the Resourcing Directorate within the People Management Department continue to engage Supply Teachers during the scholastic year to meet the demands of Primary and Secondary state schools. To ensure that these Supply Teachers enter employment with adequate initial training while encouraging them to continue furthering their studies in pedagogy, the ERD organises two yearly seminars, one in September and another in February.

On the 13th of February 2025, a cohort of fifty Supply Teachers attended an Induction Seminar at the newly refurbished, modern and technologically equipped Science Centre in Pembroke. The seminar aimed to equip Supply Teachers with essential knowledge and skills to integrate effectively into the education system. The aim was to foster a supportive environment, ensuring supply teachers feel confident, valued, and prepared to effectively contribute to students’ learning and wellbeing.

Key sessions included presentations on Supply Teachers’ documentation procedures, classroom management, curriculum and assessment, The Code of Ethics, warranting procedures, and the role of the Council for the Teaching Profession. Education Officers conducted workshops and provided practical advice on effective teaching and learning strategies.

Additionally, Supply Teachers were given information on opportunities to further their pedagogical studies.  This initiative aligns with the new agreement, which provides pathways for Supply Teachers to become regular teachers through accredited academic programmes.

The People Management Department reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Supply Teachers and ensuring they receive the necessary training and guidance to excel in their present and future roles within the education sector.
