During the summer months, the National Literacy Agency organized the eighth edition of the ‘Aqra fis-Sajf 2022’ Summer Reading Campaign to encourage children to continue reading during the summer months. This campaign is organised in order to sustain the abilities and skills pupils acquire throughout the school year.
The Agency offered a number of interactive sessions, delivered in Maltese and English, in Skolasajf and Catch-Up Schools. These included ‘The Magic of Stories’, the ‘Footballers’ Read and Write Programme’ and the ‘Reading Ambassadors’ programme. Pupils who attended Skolasajf enjoyed read aloud and shared reading sessions, delivered by trained reading animators, and the participating pupils in the Catch-up school programme engaged in fun educational activities, delivered by the Agency’s Literacy Leaders, that aimed to improve the pupils’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through engaging sessions on various themes. A total of 41 Skolasajf centres and 6 Catch-Up schools benefitted from these programmes.
Pupils who attended literacy intervention programmes during the previous scholastic year were given the opportunity to attend online reading sessions. The Literacy and Information Support Unit within the Agency also coordinated the opening of 18 school-libraries across Malta and Gozo.
