Between Thursday 3rd and Sunday 6th November 2022, GMR together with Gaming Malta, with the support of the Ministry for Economy, EU Funds and Lands and the cooperation of the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation organised Playcon, Malta’s largest Game Development and Esports Expo, at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC) in Ta’ Qali. About 5000 students (year 4 -11) visited Playcon on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th November, between 09:00 and 14:00.

As per its first edition, Playcon showcased the educational value of games and esports while giving students the opportunity to experience first-hand the principles of learning found in good game designs. During the Expo, students were able to attend a selected number of workshops, organised as part of the EU Code Week, during which they were able to experience coding in a fun and interactive way. Students also had the opportunity to participate in a number of hands-on activities like a sim-racing challenge and play a number of games, including Minecraft (Education Edition). Students also toured the Expo and the various stands related to esports and careers in game design and development, apart from witnessing a number of emerging technologies.

During the weekend the Ministry for Education Sport Youth Research and Innovation was also active with a number of stands.  Well done to the educators who were organising the workshops and all those who contributed in any way to make this a successful event.
