A group of students and teachers from St Margaret’s College Verdala Secondary School, Cospicua were invited to go to China on a Cultural program prepared by the Ministry for Chinese Culture.
On Sunday, 2 July 2023 a group of 11 Maltese students and two teachers left for China on a cultural program prepared by the Ministry for Chinese Culture. The students are from St Margaret’s College Secondary School Verdala, Cospicua who regularly participate in the ‘Science China Corner’ projects together with two other students from a Church school who participate every year (affiliated with the Science China Corner) in the Chinese competition launched by the Youth Link Guangdong Association of Guangdong Province, China. The group of Maltese students will be under the supervision of the Science teacher and founder of the Science China Corner, Mr. Martin Azzopardi who will be accompanied by the History teacher, Miss Joanne Dalli. Last summer, teacher Martin Azzopardi received the wonderful news from the Chinese Ambassador to Malta, His Excellency, Mr. Yu Dunhai that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the friendship between Malta and the China, the President of China, the Hon. Xi Jinping had the pleasure to send him a letter of appreciation for the valuable work he is doing on the ‘Science China Corner’. In this letter, among others, the President of China extends an open invitation to Mr. Azzopardi and his students to go to China on a cultural program thus further strengthening the friendship between the two countries. This letter of appreciation was officially presented to Mr Azzopardi on 6 October 2022 at St Margaret’s College Secondary School Verdala, Cospicua by the Chinese Ambassador to Malta, His Excellency Mr. Yu Dunhai in the presence of the Minister of Education, Sport, Youth Research and Innovation, the Hon. Mr. Clifton Grima, the Director of the Centre of Chinese Culture in Valletta, Mrs. Yuan Yuan and the President of the Malta Sino Friendship Society, the Honorable Mr. Reno Calleja.
During the ten-day program in China, the Maltese students will visit the capital city of Beijing together with the Province of Shandong and Sichuan in China. They will have the opportunity to meet members of the diplomatic corps in China. The students are also invited to participate in the ‘China International Youth Cultural Exchange Camp Activities 2023’ where they will have the opportunity to present their talents together with other students from Saudi Arabia.
The Founder teacher Mr. Azzopardi said: “This is a unique opportunity for Maltese students for which they are very grateful to the Chinese Embassy in Malta and to the Chinese Ministry of Culture who thought of all the preparations needed for this intensive cultural program. Now the Maltese students can directly appreciate the vast Chinese culture, while representing Malta in China and serve as a bridge of friendship between the two countries”.
