Nwar is a family literacy after-school intervention programme for students who are encountering literacy difficulties in Maltese or English. This programme targets the acquisition of basic skills: phonological knowledge, alphabet knowledge, phonic knowledge, reading, spelling, writing and comprehension strategies. During this scholastic year 2022-2023 Nwar was being offered twice a week in the afternoon (either between 16:00 and 17:00 or 17:00 and 18:00), face-to-face, in the following centres: San Ġwann, Rabat, Birkirkara, Ħamrun SS, Ħaż-Żabbar, Fgura, Qormi SB, Żurrieq, St Paul’s Bay and Xewkija.
246 students who had difficulties with reading and spelling were making use of this service. Parents/caregivers accompanied the students as this programme aims to help families to support their children in literacy.
