The Directorate for Lifelong Learning and Employability is pleased to invite you to a free Active Citizenship Education Workshop that shall be held in Gozo. This workshop will be led by Dr Jean Claude Cachia and will offer participants an opportunity to reflect on the role of citizens in shaping a democratic society grounded in European values.
The workshop will explore key questions, including:
- What is outlined in Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union (TEU)?
- In what ways has Malta integrated European values into its national framework?
- How has the European Union promoted these values across member states?
- What is the role of the citizen within Maltese society today?
The session will commence with an overview of active citizenship, highlighting its importance within a democratic context. Participants will then examine the foundational values enshrined in Article 2 TEU and consider Malta’s efforts in adopting these principles.
Through the analysis of case studies and facilitated discussion, we will assess the impact of EU initiatives, such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps, in fostering active engagement, especially among young people. Furthermore, the workshop will consider how these initiatives contribute to combating disinformation, discrimination, and radicalisation.
The session will conclude with a dialogue addressing the challenges and opportunities for promoting active citizenship in Malta, as well as strategies to strengthen public participation in line with European democratic ideals.
