Design & Technology Expo Awards Celebrate Student Innovation and 25 Years of D&T Education in Malta

The Design and Technology Learning Centre (DTLC), within the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes (DSVP), proudly celebrated 25 years of Design and Technology Education in Malta during the special edition of the Design and Technology Expo Awards, held on 25 September 2026.

The commemorative event recognised outstanding student achievement, creativity, innovation, and technical excellence through the presentation of awards for the most exceptional Design and Technology projects produced during the current scholastic year. Awards were presented by Permanent Secretary Mr Matthew Vella and Director Dr Melanie Casha Sammut, together with a number of special industry-sponsored awards recognising excellence in specific areas of design and innovation.

The event was led by Mr Keith Galea, Education Officer for Design and Technology, and was hosted by Ms Maria Laura Vella Clark. It brought together students, educators, industry representatives, former DTLC staff members, collaborators, and distinguished guests to celebrate both current achievements and the significant contribution of Design and Technology education over the past twenty-five years.

The Awards formed the culmination of a rigorous process involving nominations by Design and Technology teachers from secondary schools across Malta and Gozo. More than 70 students were nominated, resulting in 40 project submissions that were assessed by an expert judging panel. Following a detailed evaluation process, 20 students were recognised with awards for outstanding achievement, creativity, problem-solving, and innovation.

A commemorative reception followed the awards ceremony at the DTLC and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ Youth Village facilities. The gathering provided an opportunity to honour the founders of the DTLC, recognise the dedication of past and present Design and Technology educators, and celebrate the students and families whose commitment continues to strengthen the Design and Technology community in Malta.

This special anniversary edition was made possible through the support of a number of valued partners, including Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, Valletta Design Cluster, Esplora, the European Institute for Emergent Technologies (EIET), and the Malta Crafts Foundation.

Reflecting on the occasion, the Directorate for STEM and VET Programmes reaffirmed its commitment to fostering creativity, innovation, design thinking, and practical problem-solving skills among young learners. Over the past twenty-five years, the DTLC has played a key role in inspiring generations of students to engage with technology, engineering, design, and making, while helping to develop the skills required for the future world of work.

The Directorate extends its sincere appreciation to all educators, partners, collaborators, students, parents, judges, and organisers whose dedication and support contributed to making this milestone

celebration a resounding success.
