High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge 2025

Thomas Paul Deguara from St Augustine College – Primary Campus, is the top-performing Year 5 student and the overall winner of this year’s High 5 Junior Mathematicians ChallengeLogan Vella Miruzzi from San Gorg Preca College, Lorenzo Balbi Marsa Primary School placed 2nd, while Adriano Jesus Lattes from Maria Regina College, Dun Karm Xerri, Naxxar Primary School and Andrea Cardona from Maria Regina College, Mosta Primary B School tied for 3rd place.

The team challenge winners are Mikael Delia from De La Salle College (Junior School)Nathan Fenech from St Margaret College, Dr Frans Chetcuti, Zabbar Primary School BNikolai Cremona from St Martin’s CollegeThomas Paul Deguara from St Augustine College – Primary Campus.

A total of 61 Year 5 and 6 students with a talent in Mathematics from various primary schools participated in this year’s tenth edition of the challenge.  Initially, 270 students from 64 schools had been nominated to take part.

The students had the opportunity to participate in a two-day Maths Camp held at the STEM & VET Curriculum Hub, Pembroke. The theme of the camp was The Power of Numbers. During the camp, the students engaged in various workshops that provided an excellent opportunity to nurture their skills through practice in stimulating problems that go beyond mere computation. They were also presented with rich tasks that required spatial as well as analytic abilities.  During the camp, the students had a surprise visit by Sarah Bonnici (Malta Eurovision Song Contest Representative 2024), when they cracked the code LOOP. The High5ers had the opportunity for a Q&A session with Sarah, which both the students and Sarah enjoyed a lot.

The High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge is organised by the Primary Maths Support Team within the Directorate for STEM & VET Programmes.

The High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge 2026 programme will be communicated in October 2025.
