Art and Democracy Creative Workshops- Reimagining Tomorrow: Possibilities for Peace

On the 9th and 10th of October 2025, around 50 Art students at Maria Regina College, Lily of the Valley, Secondary School Mosta and the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College, Malta School of Art participated in the Art and Democracy workshops as part of the national festival of ideas.  These workshops formed part of the Transformation Hub on the Move series and were organised in collaboration with the Culture Directorate.

The workshops were facilitated by Ms. Sylvia Binger, who used to work at the European Parliament as an Art Expert, and focused on encouraging students’ creative reflection and collaborative communication around values central to democracy and peace.

Inspired by Picasso’s diverse representations of the ‘peace dove’, and class discussions on socially engaged themes such as the peace versus the effects of war, students worked in groups to create posters to raise political awareness of this societal phenomenon. They later presented their posters and creative process to their peers, sparking further dialogue and reflection on the meanings of democracy, peace, and collective representation.
