What began as a regular Social Studies fieldwork outing for our Year 6 students, quickly turned into an extraordinary experience! While they were near the Parliament, they unexpectedly met Prime Minister Robert Abela who invited the group for a special visit inside Castille! While they were on their way to Castille, he asked the students what they are doing and if they have any questions about Castille so that he could help them.
The students were super excited that they met Prime Minister Robert Abela in person. Once inside, the Prime Minister warmly welcomed the children and personally guided them around the historic building. He showed them the room where Cabinet meetings are held and invited the students to take their seats around the large table for an engaging and lively discussion.
During the visit, the Prime Minister asked the students if they like to read and he spoke about the importance of reading. He also mentioned the Malta Book Festival, which had just taken place the previous week, and encouraged the students to make good use of the book vouchers distributed during the festival. The children answered that they had already been to the Malta Book Festival as a class with their educators. They also mentioned their most favourite chosen book and some book authors. The Prime Minister reminded the children about the importance of reading books as they inspire creativity and help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
As they explored further, the students observed the bust of Grandmaster Pinto located above Castille’s main door and another one found inside the building. They also learnt about who Grandmaster Pinto was and his role in Maltese history. The students also saw photos of Malta’s previous Prime Ministers and their curiosity increased even more as they wanted to know who those people are.
The visit became even more enriching when the children were given some informational books containing information and pictures about Castille itself. Through these books and the Prime Minister’s explanations, they learnt fascinating facts about the building’s history including where Castille got its name and why this magnificent auberge was used.
The students were truly fascinated by everything they saw and heard. Their excitement was evident as they realised they were standing in one of Malta’s most important buildings and even more so because they had the unique opportunity to meet and talk with the Prime Minister himself!
It was truly a memorable and inspiring experience! One that brought learning to life far beyond the classroom walls and left our students with wonderful memories that they will cherish for years to come! This Social Studies Fieldwork will definitely be one to remember!
