The “summer slide” refers to the learning loss many children experience during the long summer break from school.
During summer 2024, the National Literacy Agency (NLA) provided literacy support to a total of 742 primary school children, many of whom had participated in Reading Recovery, Nwar, Klabb Naħla or Read Aloud/ Ħlewwet il-Qari during scholastic year 2023-2024.

Specialised tutors planned and delivered an instructional programme based on two/ three weekly sessions, designed to meet the individual needs of these children who had manifested literacy difficulties. These additional literacy programmes helped children to develop more effective reading and writing strategies during summer, enabling them to be able to work closer to the average range of classroom performance in the upcoming scholastic year.
