“New Ethics Student Books Distributed to Secondary Schools Across Malta and Gozo”

The Directorate for Early Years, Languages, and Humanities has just disseminated to all Secondary State Schools in Malta and Gozo, printed copies of the newly published Ethics Student Books; freely available to all students opting for Ethics Education. This initiative aims to provide high quality learning materials related to the public MATSEC Examinations in Ethics.

Three student books for Year 9 students were already published before and made available while four more were added this year for Year 10 students, bringing the total number of student books to seven. The aim is to produce three more, thus covering all ten learning outcomes of the MATSEC syllabus at levels 1,2, and 3 of the Malta Qualifications Framework.

Research has shown that the availability of off-the-shelf learning materials impacts students’ success, motivation, and engagement, as well as teachers’ well-being and creativity (Kirabo Jackson & Makarin, 2017). With readily available materials, teachers can devote more time to creating stimulating and thought-provoking lessons, customize learning for individual needs or particular contexts, and foster classroom communities of inquiry.

This would not have been possible without the work from the Ethics Department co-headed by Mr Roger Tirazona and Ms Kirby Caruana and the collaboration of Dr Lucianne Zammit who is the coordinator for the subject of Ethics with the Faculty of Education; Ms Sandra Ebejer, director for DELH, as well as Permanent Secretary Mr Matthew Vella and Director General for curriculum Mr Jude Zammit. One must also acknowledge the sterling work of the Ministry’s logistics department who have managed deliveries to all schools.
