16th Edition China Cultural Centre Awards Ceremony

On the 5 June 2026, the China Cultural Centre hosted the Awards Ceremony for the 16th Edition of the China Cultural Centre Art Competition and Exhibition, entitled: “Nihao China… Exploring Zhejiang on a Maltese Luzzu”. The event was attended by H.E. Ambassador Zhang Zuo, China Cultural Centre Director Dr Chen Xiao, Director for Early Years, Languages and Humanities within the Ministry for Education Dr Alice Micallef, Art Education Officer Dr Charmaine Zammit, as well as students, Heads of School, teachers, and proud parents.

The ceremony celebrated the artistic achievements of students from secondary and post-secondary schools across Malta and Gozo, recognising both award winners and rising stars. Guests were also given the opportunity to revisit the memorable cultural exchange visit to Zhejiang, China, which took place from the 13th till 19th September 2025. The Maltese delegation consisted of the seven student prize winners, Art teacher Mr Donald Camilleri, Art Education Officer Dr Charmaine Zammit, and Director Dr Alice Micallef. During the visit, the delegation attended the opening of the China–Malta Students’ Art Exhibition entitled: “Voyage of Art” at the Zhejiang Art Museum and explored a number of cultural and educational sites, including West Lake, Wuzhen, local schools, museums, and other historical and scenic locations. The experience provided students with valuable opportunities for cultural exchange, artistic inspiration, and international friendship.

During the awards ceremony, prize winners and rising stars were presented with beautifully crafted certificates and commemorative gifts by the China Cultural Centre in recognition of their achievements and participation. The celebrations concluded with a reception featuring traditional Chinese cuisine.

Looking ahead to the 17th Edition of the competition, Dr Chen Xiao announced an exciting new development: the introduction of a short video submission. This addition aims to embrace new media and contemporary forms of artistic expression, while further strengthening cultural communication and creative engagement among young people.

As per the annual procedure, a circular containing detailed information about the theme, guidelines, and submission requirements for the 17th Edition of the competition will be issued to all secondary and post-secondary state and non-state schools at the beginning of the next scholastic year.
