Democracy Camp: A Hands-On Introduction to Democratic Values

The Life Skills Lab launched its 2025 programme with Democracy Camp, a residential experience held at the Youth Activity Centre in Marsaxlokk. The camp brought together over 20 young people to explore the concept of democracy in everyday life through practical, engaging activities.

Rather than focusing solely on theoretical discussions, participants experienced democratic principles through daily routines placing food at the heart of the learning process. Initially, youth workers led the meal planning, selecting menus themselves to illustrate a top-down decision-making model. As the programme progressed, participants took the lead: working in groups to design meals, vote on options, and shop for ingredients collaboratively. This shift enabled them to engage in decision-making, negotiation, and shared responsibility in a tangible and relatable way.

Beyond meal preparation, the camp emphasised the importance of living and working together. Participants shared responsibilities, collaborated with peers they had not met before, and developed essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, and compromise all key components of democratic participation.

Democracy Camp reflects the core mission of the Life Skills Lab: to provide young people with experiential learning opportunities that foster confidence, accountability, and cooperation. Through initiatives like this, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ continues to empower young people to learn by doing and to build meaningful connections that extend beyond the programme itself.

“What an experience! Thank you so much for the time taken to explain not only democracy and the activities but giving us a chance to actually learn it through hands on workshops. Really loved the games that you provided and let’s not forget allowing the full participation of the youths. I really won’t forget this memorable experience and new friends I made. Thank you so much!” – Democracy Camp participant (14 yrs).
