Maltese Students Experience European Democracy in Strasbourg

A group of twelve students from St. Clare’s College, Sir Adrian Dingli Middle and Secondary School and another twelve from the National Sports School, accompanied by four educators, Ms Angele Vella Lauwers, Mr Daniel Spiteri, Ms Marija Zarb and Mr Gianluca Borg, participated in the Euroscola programme in Strasbourg between 16 and 19 October.

The highlight of the trip was a full-day visit to the European Parliament. Students attended an official Euroscola session that began with a video message from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and a live Q&A with Vice-President Martin Hojsík. Discussions touched on key topics such as defence, sustainability, and social issues.

Students took part in interactive workshops simulating parliamentary debates and voting procedures. Maltese participants made notable contributions, with interventions by Jasmitha Lara Bathini, Jake Caligari, and Jenna Awad Attia during the plenary discussions, while Anna Spiridonova, Liliana Kuciakowska, Noemi Vegliante, Mattea Saliba, and Jack Abela Meli stood out in the workshops. Mattea Saliba’s proposal went on to receive the highest number of votes in the session.

The four-day experience offered a unique blend of education, culture, and discovery. It deepened students’ understanding of European values and institutions while fostering lasting friendships. The group returned to Malta on the evening of 19 October, bringing back unforgettable memories of their Euroscola journey.
