German Speaking Champions 2023-2024

The German Department organised the second prize-giving ceremony: German Speaking Champions 2023-2024. It was held on March 12th, 2024, at St Theresa College Middle School, Birkirkara.

Teachers of German were invited to submit the names of three Year 8 students and 3 Year 10 students to participate in a German Speaking Contest.126 young speakers from 30 state and non-state schools have been nominated and brought for a get together to showcase their speaking abilities on March 12th, 2024. The main objective of these awards was to give recognition, not only to those students who performed well in speaking tasks, but also those who tried to improve their proficiency in speaking.

Year 8 German Speaking Champions Winners:

1st Place- Christophe Kannenberg from St Martin`s College, Msida

2nd Place- Maria Naudi from St Monica School, Gzira

3rd Place- Mariah Borg from St Benedict College Middle School, Kirkop

 

Year 10 German Speaking Champions Winners:

1st Place- Vincent Camilleri from St Benedict College Secondary School, Kirkop

2nd Place- Emily Zammit from St Monica School, Gzira

3rd Place- Leona Farrugia from St Benedict College Secondary School, Kirkop

Aside from the German Speaking Award ceremony, the German Department celebrated several achievements of some of the students of German throughout this scholastic year and shared the latest news with a special emphasis on Digital Literacy:

  • Its quarterly digital newsletter, Freude an Deutsch and the launching of its logo created by Jasmine Mc Carthy, (Year 9, St Clare College Middle and Secondary School, Pembroke).
  • The German Website and the launching of its logo created by Nathan Grech, (Year 7, De La Salle College Secondary School, Birgu).
  • The new language magazine for Primary School children, DeutschKids.
  • In collaboration with the Directorate for Digital Literacy and Transversal Skills, a series of digital activities for educators and students of German have been organised to promote the use of digital tools in the teaching and learning of German. The topic was the most famous German Speaking Countries Landmarks. Students of German at St Theresa College Middle School created a presentation about famous landmarks using iPads with the Microsoft Office App Sway. There was a scavenger hunt- using iPads, students scanned QR codes which allowed them to access several texts in German with multiple choice questions about famous landmarks. A green screen was used for the commemorative photos. A physical backdrop was placed behind students and guests for the intention of editing special effects into famous German Speaking Country landmarks.
  • There was a VR stand were teachers of German and guests were invited to explore the virtual reality. It enabled users to explore and interact with a virtual surrounding, a famous place like Berlin, Vienna and Bern.
