Historic Bronze Medal for Malta at the 2024 ISF GYMNASIADE

Gymnast Sophie St. John takes Bronze in Bahrain

The Malta School Sport Federation (MSSF) took part in the  2024 International School Sport Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade in Bahrain.

The School Sports Games, as they are commonly referred to,  are held every two years under the supervision of the ISF and have been recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1995.  This year’s edition saw approximately 4000 student athletes aged 14 to 18, compete in 20 different sporting disciplines.

Malta was represented by 12 athletes who competed in athletics, swimming and artistic gymnastics.

Undoubtedly, the best result was achieved by gymnast  Sophie St. John who placed third in the Balance Beam. Battling fierce competition St John kept her composure and showed maturity on the apparatus.  St. John also finished fifth in the floor routine with another solid performance.

Another result that cannot be left unnoticed was achieved by Matthew Fleri Soler in the 400m track event. First year University of Malta student Matthew Fleri Soler finished the final round  in 4th place with a new personal best of 47.61sec.

These games not only provide a strong competitive environment but also offer a valuable educational experience. Team Malta participated in Nation’s Night, attended an Anti-Doping Educational Workshop, and enjoyed a Cultural Visit.

Upon their return to Malta, the MSSF  took the opportunity to thank the administrators and coaches who were instrumental in the team’s success and reiterated their commitment to continue to provide opportunities and support for competitions that fall under the MSSF’s remit.

Malta’s participation in the 2024 ISF GYMNASIADE  was made possible thanks to the support from the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR) through the National Sport School,   SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee.
