On Tuesday 19 November 2024, a ceremony was held at the Hall of St Thomas More College Carlo Diacono Middle and Secondary School, in which a showcase with historical artefacts was unveiled for the use of Middle School students. A total of 13 showcases have been given to the State Middle School by the History Department within the DELH which will host several replicas of historical artifacts from pre-history to the Middle Ages. This was done so that the students, while observing and handling such artefacts, could reach conclusions about the people and the time when they were used.
Ms Sandra Ebejer, Director DELH delivered the opening address and unveiled one of the showcases in the presence of the Mr George Psaila, Head of College Network, Mr Adrian Galea, Head of the School and Mr Raymond Spiteri, Education Officer for History. For this ceremony there were among the guests, assistant directors, assistant heads of schools, officials from Heritage Malta and the Faculty of Education, educational officers and heads of departments and history teachers from the Middle Schools.
Mr. Jesmond Grech, head of the History department at the school, made a speech where he explained the importance of teaching history in the curriculum, while Mr. Raymond Spiteri explained how good use can be made of replicas of historical artefacts. Mr. Jonathan Muscat, HOD, announced a hands-on exercise involving samples of the artifacts carried out by a group of Year 7 and 8 students. The students, under the guidance of their teachers Ms Graziella Busuttil and Ms Antoinette Agius, were given time to explain their answers to the audience.
At the end the reception, representatives from the Middle Schools invited to this event were able to collect the replicas of historical artefacts allocated to their school.
