The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation yesterday launched the Malta School Games, where schools across Malta will compete in various sports disciplines this May in the first-ever competition of this sort. The games will see Malta’s State, Independent, and Church schools compete in athletics, swimming, basketball, football, netball, and rugby, among other sports, between May 19 and 23.
The announcement was followed by a short ceremony that saw dozens of secondary school students parade from the Education Ministry in Floriana to the Triton Fountain.
The highlight of the event was the Torch Relay, symbolizing unity, determination, and the spirit of competition. The torch was carried by a selection of young athletes from San Gorg Preca College, representing the values of perseverance and teamwork. This historic moment not only ignited the passion of student-athletes but also reinforced the importance of sports in education, fostering a culture of inclusivity and excellence across schools in Malta.
This flame, which will officially mark the start of these games, holds great significance as it symbolizes hope, unity, and perseverance—values that reflect the Olympic ideals of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship.
A statement by the education ministry said the government wants to improve the well-being of students through sports and sports competitions.
