Andrew Ellul from St Ignatius College Luqa Primary, and Noah Bugeja from St Augustine College Primary Campus won this year’s edition of the High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge. Mattias Attard Zammit from St Ignatius College Siggiewi Primary placed 2nd, while Eli John Camilleri and Thomas Cilia, both from St Paul’s Missionary College, tied for 3rd place. Mattia Mifsud from San Andrea School was the top-performing Year 5 student.

The team challenge winners were Katrina Rotin from Theresa Nuzzo School Marsa, Kayden Sultana from St Theresa College Birkirkara Primary, Keith James Borg from St Ignatius College Siggiewi Primary, Luigi Frendo Galea from Stella Maris College Junior School and Luke Mifsud Bonnici from San Anton.

A total of 66 Year 5 and 6 students with a talent in Mathematics from various primary schools participated in this year’s ninth edition of the challenge.  Initially, 298 students from 69 schools had been nominated to take part.  Result Announcement is available HERE.

During the challenge, the students engaged in after-school workshops planned and delivered by the Primary Mathematics Support Team.  These workshops were inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals and provided an excellent opportunity for students to nurture their skills through practice in stimulating problems that go beyond mere computation. The workshops featured rich tasks that required both spatial and analytic abilities. Students were given the chance to enrich their heuristic skills and were further challenged to create questions and explore and develop mathematical concepts.

The High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge is organised by the Directorate for STEM & VET Programmes, in collaboration with HSBC Malta FoundationHSBC Malta Foundation supported the awards for the winning students.

The students who landed the top 10 positions and the best performing Year 5 students have been given the opportunity to participate in the Mathematics Without Borders tournament 2025.

The High 5 Junior Mathematicians Challenge 2025 programme will be communicated shortly.
