Celebrating Ten Years of Ethics Education in Malta

On Wednesday, 19th February, the Directorate for Early Years, Languages, and Humanities (DELH) celebrated the 10th anniversary of Ethics Education in Maltese schools.

To mark this important milestone, the Directorate invited representatives from the University of Malta, key collaborators with the Ministry for Education during the early years of establishing and implementing this subject. The University Rector, Professor Alfred Vella, opened the conference with a reflection on the significance of ethics as an essential component of a student’s holistic education. Professor Colin Calleja, Dean of the Faculty of Education, elaborated on the Faculty’s role in specialised teacher training for Ethics Education.

Dr. Lucianne Zammit, Ethics Coordinator and Lecturer at the University of Malta, who also served as Education Officer for Ethics during its formative years, provided an insightful account of the subject’s development over the past decade. The Director for Education Resources, Ms. Lucienne Calleja, highlighted the growing number of students opting for Ethics and the subsequent increasing demand for specialised teachers.

Ms. Kirby Caruana and Mr. Roger Tirazona, Ethics Heads of Department, shared detailed information on the resources available for teachers and students, the ongoing updates to syllabi across all year groups, and the impact of Ethics Education on both national and international platforms.

Director for Early Years, Languages, and Humanities, Ms. Sandra Ebejer, concluded the event with a reflection on the success achieved so far, future plans aligned with the National Education Strategy, and the importance of nurturing a generation capable of making ethical decisions, fostering a responsible and reflective society.

DELH extends its gratitude to Xjenza Malta for hosting the event at the Chaplain’s Hall at Esplora and to DDLTS for live-streaming the presentations on the Edukazzjoni social media page.
